You have been imprisoned at Alcatraz for twenty-one years after being falsely accused of murder. You have lived there most of your life, and the only good food you can remember is rotten slabs of meat and stale crunches of bread. One day, you decide you have had enough: you are going to attempt a jailbreak.
Many have tried before. Only a few got off the island. You remember your ancestor, Errol Roy, who successfully managed to break out, but he is long dead. Your mother had given you old parchments that she claimed once belonged to Roy, who had passed them to his friend Clarence Morris before the jailbreak. Maybe they can give you clues.
You study Alcatraz's security and learn that there is a five-number lock connected to a secret passageway out of your cell. Then, to get out of the cell rooms, you must get past another door lock. To swim away from Alcatraz, you must find the safety boats stored on the island, all while avoiding the guards.
The guards visit every hour, so you have only one hour alone to try to break out. You are sure you can handle the adventurous parts, but can you decode the messages your ancestor left for you? He wrote them in complicated ciphers so they would be useless if they fell into the wrong hands.
Some clues you have
- Vestine is the Head Guard, and lives on the edge of Alcatraz.
- Remember: “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.”
- All are ciphers.
Will you be able to find your way out with your ancestor’s help? Good luck!
